Today I started working on my research poster. Creating a poster on Photoshop is something that i have not attempted before so this is something that i am finding to be challenging. In order to help me with my poster i have looked at some written tutorial articles in order to help me and to also help develop my skills on Photoshop.
I mainly started by sorting out all of the information that i wanted to put onto my poster, and what layout i was aiming for. I began to create the poster and created the layout.
As a first attempt i think it went well with the assistance of the tutorials, and this is something i hope to develop as i can carry on with producing my work.
We have been given the task of looking into a piece of software that we want to become more familiar with and what we want to develop more skills in. We have been asked to carry out practical work in this software over the coming weeks in order for us to develop these skills.
I have chosen Photoshop as the software that I’m going to look into over the next few weeks. This is because although i have used Photoshop before, it is still something that I’m not overly familiar with and i would like to develop my skills here a lot more as i feel like this will help me with future work.
We have been given the task of creating our research question that we will have to carry out and research into. The aim is to produce two presentations, one posing our question and our intention, and the second posing our results and conclusions. This will be all summed up in a final poster design at the end of the year.
For my question I’m going to look into how noise can be reduced through camera settings and i will carry out an experiment to show my findings from my research.
In today’s session we were allowed to go out and take some practice photos for our chosen competition or client briefs. The aim was to help us gather ideas for when we were going to perform the actual task in the coming weeks.
During this session I assisted Alon with his prototyping for his brief as i wasn’t prepared for the session due to missing the prior one. I helped his prototyping by modeling for some photographs that he was going to practice on and edit ahead of his real shoot, photographing models wearing a clothing brand.
note- I later did this session in my own time and took some photos of Nottingham in order to do my own prototyping ahead of my own shoot.
Today Ben, Kyle and I both attended another event with The Young Carers charity. This time the event took place at a laser tag event in Mansfield.
The arrangement was the same as last week with the roles we were taking. Upon arrival to the event, whilst the children were prepping for laser tag, we had some time to film another interview. We managed to interview someone who used to participate in The Young Carers programme and who now volunteers for it. This was a great feature to include in the video as it shows just what the charity can do for young people.
After filming this short interview we entered the laser tag arena and filmed some footage and i took some photographs. However due to the conditions of the event it was incredibly difficult to take photographs with is pretty much being in the darkness and the inability to use flash. This meant that almost all of the photographs were unusable. Regardless of this it was still experience in a new condition that was extremely challenging which i enjoyed regardless of the photograph outcomes.
Next time i would try and take different lenses and see if this would improve the ability to photograph in the dark in order to gain better photographs.
(will insert photos at later date).
Today was the first day of our placement that was taking place at The Folkhouse in Mansfield. This is a youth center where the organisation we were working with is located in Mansfield. We were working with a Nottingham based charity called The Young Carers, who offer help to young children who have a family member that suffers with a physical or mental ailment that they have to care for. The programme offers the children the opportunity to interact with other children who are similar to them and to participate in events that take them away from these extra responsibilities that they face at home.
I worked alongside Michaela, Ben and Kyle on this project with us all photographing and filming the children taking part in one of the event days they offered. Michaela and I focused on the photography aspects whilst Ben and Kyle focused on the filming.
This offered me the opportunity to participate in photographing a real life event which is experience that i am currently lacking so this made for invaluable experience.
Today I did struggle with the equipment that i was using as i really struggled to find settings that would help to better the poor lighting in the venue. I also struggled with the choice of lens (18-55ml) as i feel a wider one would’ve been a better option for this event. If i were to do this again i would ensure that i had appropriate equipment for the event and to make sure that i am more knowledgeable with the camera i have chosen to use to make adjusting the settings easier.
Today after receiving some input from the rest of my group I managed to finish the writing for the remainder of the teachers pack. This focused on including some brief information about the castles history in a timeline style, writing up an example itinerary and adding a few things here and there to make sure that it covered everything we wanted to include. After finishing the writing I handed over my information to Harry who had designed the teachers pack so we could finalize it and put it altogether.
I feel like the information I included for the teachers pack was relevant for teachers and for booking a school trip easily. But however, after researching into other teachers packs, especially those related to other castles, it is apparent that the amount of information in our teacher pack is a lot substantial. This is something i felt like could be improved if i were to do it again. I would do this by doing even more in depth research about teaching packs but also by getting as much information about Nottingham Castle and their relationships with schools from the venue itself as i feel like they could offer me a lot of information that could’ve been helpful and used in this teacher pack. But something to remember is that in those castle teacher packs, the castle was actually a castle, and not a reconstructed ducal palace, so they had a lot more to inform the teachers about in regards to their specific venues.
